Purchasing and payment onboard the train
We strongly advise you to make sure you have a valid ticket on you before boarding the train. You can easily buy a ticket through one of our different sales channels (website, SNCB app, ticket vending machine, the ticket counter).
Do you need to buy train tickets in advance in Belgium? You don’t need to purchase your tickets in advance as seat reservations are not available. Your ticket is valid for a single journey (or a return journey, if marked as such), at any time of the day specified on your rail ticket and either in 2nd or 1st class,as you have chosen.

Can you travel on train without ticket?
As set out under the Penalty Fares regulations, passengers found without a valid ticket for their journey must pay a penalty fare of either: £20. twice the full single-fare to the next station at which the train calls, whichever is the greater.

What happens if we miss the train?
Missed Train Confirm ticket
You have to buy another reserved ticket if available to travel in reserved coaches. You may get refund from railways by filing TDR (ticket deposit receipt) as per extant rules citing reasons for not travelling.
Can I travel with WL ticket in train? * No waitlisted ticket holder will be allowed to travel, according to the new rules. These passengers will, however, get a full refund from the Railways.
How do I get a free 16-25 Railcard? If you’re between 16 and 25 years old, you’re eligible. In this case, you can buy your Railcard online using a valid debit or credit card, a valid UK driving licence or international passport, and a digital passport-style photo for uploading. Can I get on another train if mine is delayed?
You would be able to use the ticket on the next permitted train. If you want to use a different train operator or a different route you would have to get the ticket endorsed at the ticket office. If the delay is their fault they would revalidate the ticket for a different train and / or route.
Can I board train from next station? In case you miss the train from your designated boarding station, the TTE cannot allocate your berth to anyone else until the train passes the next two stops or during the next one hour (whichever is earliest). The rule thus allows you to board the train from the next upcoming station, if that is feasible.
Can I get on a later train than booked?
If you’ve booked a Return ticket, then your outbound journey needs to be taken on the same date that you booked it for, but you can travel on any Off-Peak or Super Off-Peak train that’s available for your route that day.
Is it cheaper to buy a train ticket or use contactless? Both offer cheaper fares than buying a paper ticket – but there is an extra trick contactless delivers. If you use a contactless card you benefit not just from a daily cap, but also from a Monday to Sunday weekly cap that means you won’t pay more than a weekly travelcard.
Can you use your debit card on the train?
Just touch your debit or credit card on a yellow card reader to pay for your journey, the same as you would with your Oyster card, and you won’t have to queue for tickets at the station and won’t have to top up. Always remember to touch in and out.
