Can you walk around Uluru for free?
Walk around the base of Uluru
Although there’s an entry fee for Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, the value you’ll get from visiting the Park and being so close to Uluru is priceless. Once inside the Park there are a number of walks and experiences that take you up close to explore this monolith.
Do you need a 4WD to go to Uluru? Do I need a 4WD to visit the park? All of the roads in the national park are fully paved and can be driven in a standard two-wheel-drive vehicle. The road from Alice Springs to Uluru-Kata Tjuta is also fully paved. However, a 4WD is recommended if you are driving to the park from Western Australia.
Can you touch Uluru? Whilst climbing Uluru has been rightfully discontinued, you are permitted to touch the rock during an unforgettable Uluru base walk. There are some sacred spots along the rock that the Anangu people wish for you not to touch or photograph, and these can be learned more about upon your visit to the amazing Uluru!
Can you see Field of Lights for free? The Field of Light area is not generally accessible to the public. You won’t notice it as you do your other Uluru activities.
How long dies it take to walk around Ayers Rock?
The walk is 10.6 km loop around the entire base of Ayers Rock. It takes most people around 3.5 hours to complete. Whilst most people might baulk at walking 10 km, the information provided on the signs on this walk are worth the walk.
Can you take alcohol into Uluru? Limits: Sales of take away to in-house resort guests only. Sales are limited to 6 cans of beer or 6 RTD spirits in bottle or can per person per day.
Can you drive to Birdsville in a 2WD?
You can drive the Birdsville Track in a 2WD car, except after rain or flood. Washouts, bulldust holes and the rough road surface can damage the undercarriage of any car with low road clearance. But the Birdsville Track is graded regularly and is generally easy to drive. There are also 4WD Tagalong or bus tours.
How many days do you need at Ayers Rock? Given the wide variety of activities on offer, we recommend staying at least three days to give yourself time to explore, learn, go on some adventures and take your time to understand this special place. But don’t worry if you’re only here for a short visit.

Can you take a caravan on the Birdsville Track?
Once Australia’s most hazardous stock route, the Birdsville Track is still an unsealed road but maintained so that you can travel in either a 4WD or SUV with a caravan or camper trailer. The road conditions can vary and you may find yourself travelling over a diverse range of surfaces from sand dunes to gibber pains.
Is Route 14 sealed? The Birdsville Developmental Road (State Route 14) is a mostly unsealed road in south-west Queensland that branches off the Diamantina Developmental Road at a point 103 kilometres (64 mi) west of Windorah and runs to Birdsville. Its length is 273 kilometres (170 mi).
Is the road from Port Augusta to Birdsville sealed? The Birdsville Developmental Road is both sealed and unsealed. Although it is well maintained, road conditions can deteriorate during the peak tourist season, especially around the time of the Birdsville Races in September.
